Is there a difference between heat codes and heat numbers? I have an MTR for a fitting that has both a heat code and heat number and they are different numbers for the same fitting.

Normally, it is a heat number that is referenced on an MTR. The heat code may be an internal designation code that is specific to the mill that produced the heat of steel to make the fitting.

You've answered your own question haven't you?

If the numbers are different then there is obviously a difference.

As a guess, the heat code might be the "recipe" for this particular part. Temperature ramp rates, dwells, atmosphere, etc.

The heat number is typically to trace back to a date and oven that the part was processed.

If you really need to know, ask the company that gave you the MTR.
