Hi,

I am seeing different types of impingement plates or at least the way they are being installed. There is a kind that is hanged from nozzle with some kind of support. There is another kind, which is directly installed on the tube bundle in shell underneath the nozzle. I still cannot distinguish those two. What is the difference? Which is better? Why is there a hanged type?

I would appreciate your help.

Abdulla Alishaq, in my experience the location of an impingement plate is to some extent a matter of convenience. Location on the bundle avoids a manufacturing operation performed inside the shell. The plate may be renewed whenever the bundle is re-furbed or replaced.

On the other hand some shell configurations such as a kettle or some types of tubefields make it impractical to attach the plate to the bundle.

Having said all that attachment to the bundle seems to be preferred when possible.

Regards,

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

I have seen a few cases of ones hanging from legs where the leg eroded away and then the plate slammed into the tube bundle.
The supports and plate must be more erosion resistant (such as SS) than the rest of the structure.
Attaching across the bundle support plates is a good approach.
