Heat treating 1095

Anyone have any tips for the heat treating process for 1095 spring steel used for auto clutch diaphragm spring. The Keyword Search bore no results.

What is the hardness requirement, and what is the section thickness?
 
We are looking for 45c and the section is .144

Austempering might work for this hardness range and would minimize distortion for your section size.
 
Any of the “10xx” series steel from 1045 and above are directly hardenable. The only added property achieved with a steel above 1045 is wear resistance.

Heat treating is accomplished in the range of 1475 F followed by oil quenching which will minimize distortion more than water quenching. In the ‘as quenched’ state, it is extremely hard (Rc 65).

Tempering must be done to reduce the hardness and increase the toughness. The normal range of tempering is 400F – 600F. However it can range from 400F to 1200F, depending on the amount of hardness/toughness desired.

For a hardness of Rc45, which would be in the ‘spring steel’ range, a good starting point would be 425F.

Both the heat treating and tempering should be done in a controlled temperature furnace to assure even heating.
