heat treating books

Hello all,

I am in process of buying some fairly small heat treat furnaces..

I do mostly 4140 and 4130 steel, and some 17-4 ph stainless..

I have been looking on the web for some books..there a a lot of different books, and I just want to know if anyone knows of a great book(s) that I can purchase that is totally user friendly concerning how to heat treat the materials that I mentioned above..

I am going to need to know the temperature and for how long to hold the parts at the given temperature..

I am a machinist by trade, not a heat treater..hence the reason i need help..

You might check out a book called

Heat Treater's Guide: Practices and Procedures for Irons and Steels

It's the best general reference I've found. You can order it through ASM or, I think, Amazon carries it.

I think most of the experienced members of this forum would agree with redpicker that ASM's Heat Treater's Guide is the reference book you need. There are a number of websites from which you can obtain it, including ASM and Amazon. ASM also has a newer book called Practical Heat Treating: Second Edition by Jon Dossett that you may want to consider.
