Heating Flamable Material

If an open 55 Gallon drum is considered a vapor source and requires Class 1 Division 1 equipment, what options are available for heating this material?

I have an electic band heater rated Class 1 Division 2.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to control the temperature during our process while the drum is fully opened. (Ambient temperature varies drastically). (Goal temperature less than 10% of AIT).

If heating at the location of the process is infeasible, 2nd best would be bringing the drum to goal temperature and then moving the material to the process.

Also, If heated away from the process and the drum is vented, rather than opened, how does that change the requirements (if the drum is located in an otherwise non-hazardous location). What does proper venting entail?

Steam or hot water.

You also need to consider the Group classification of the substance, the surface temperature rating of the heater, and the autoignition temp of the substance. The heater needs to be labeled for all of those conditions.

There are heaters labeled for Class I Div 1. They do not get as hot because they use elements with a larger surface area to spread the heat out. Your heater may end up being bigger (or use multiple units) to get the same amount of heat at a lower temperature. Your process requirements will determine how short the heating time can be.
