Heavy Power Transformer

Last week, I have seen a heavy power transformer { with iron-silicon core ) , I noticed that between every one or two layers of the primary and secondary windings there is a small bar of fiberglass.
I asked the designer about the purpose of these bars separating the layers, he said "in my head" and waked away.
I am curious to know about the purpose of those bars, is it for air cooling or something else ?

Not sure what rating transformer you have got, but I have seen transformers as you describe. I assumed it was to create a cooling air path, because I can't think of any other reason for doing this. Maybe someone else can.

I would say that the designer was a bit unhelpful too, don't invite him onto eng-tips.

Cooling, yes.

But you can also steer the leakage inductance by reducing the coupling between primary and secondary winding and create a larger short-circuit impedance to reduce Isc.

It may also be a means of reducing forces between windings when an external short circuit occurs.

But, I think that improved cooling is the main reason.
