Heavy Timber Truss Connections

There seems to be a trend of many designers using rgid truss plates instead of pinned joints. The theory is that oversizing the holes in the steel by 1/16" allows enough rotation capacity to avoid splitting the members. The wood designers I learned from where all very strongly opposed to rigid truss plates. What is your opinion?
