We have a helisep ultra 1000 o.w.s. We are having a problem with the spirolator filters and the ocm. If we use a brand new spirolator filters, after a week the said filters are fouled, then our ocm is detecting oil more than 15ppm even with the clean water. I wouls like to ask if someone out there had the same problem. Thank you and hope to hear from you guys.

I have heard the same complaint from many vessel operators. The only recommendation that seems to help is removing as much particulate matter from the bilge water prior to entering the membranes. Several stages of filtration may be required (perhaps a 20 um bag followed by a 5 um filter). Unfortunately, the best option is buying a better OWS.

on board ships, one way is to use 2 stage series filter modules prior entering OWS unit..when recurring 15ppm alarm, it dictates to clean the series filters. However, a differential pressure indicator attached at series filter is helpful to detect heavy particulates and sludge.

buying new OWS for replacement would require documentation and inspection by class society..means expenses.
