Hello All,

Where do we get the Allowable Stress for the materials in BS5500? (For ASME its easy to find from Section 2 from the tables. (For BS 5500 do we need to calculate for each material? OR can we take the allowable stress from ASME for BS 5500 std?)

Can't remember the references in BS5500 off the top of me head but in PD5500 it's Section 2.3, Annex K, plus there are also material supplement pages and Enquiry Cases at the back which includes some material allowable stress data.

The UTS factor and occasionally the yield factor is different for PD5500 to the ASME vessel codes so the allowable stresses for a 5500 vessel shouldn't be taken from ASME II-D.

Which material are you after and what design temperature?
I might be able to help.

There is also a procedure to calculate design strength to PD5500.

It's under clauses:
2.3.3.2 for Carbon, carbon manganese and low alloy steels
and
2.3.3.3 for Austenitic stainless steel
The above is for time independent stresses.

2.3.4 - Time dependent strength

Check also which Category is your equipment i.e. 1, 2 or 3 if applicable.
