In the 2023 edition of ASME Section III, Division 1, Subsection NB, it is stipulated that stress analysis shall adhere to the requirements outlined in Appendix XIII (part of the Section III appendices). Within this appendix, Figure XIII-2100-1 provides the stress classification combinations. In contrast, in the previous ASME version, the determination of the parameter “S” required a reference to ASME SEC.II, Part-D. However, in the 2023 edition, the procedure for determining “S” is explained in Appendix XIII-2300.
To determine the value of “S”, one should identify the three principal stresses and compute their differences, as explained in Appendix XIII-2300. Could someone confirm if this approach is accurate?
In Step 1 of Appendix XIII-2300, the analyst is required to identify a point of interest and establish a local coordinate system centered on that point. Subsequently, the analyst should extract the six stress components relevant to this local coordinate system. Notably, this approach eliminates the necessity for stress linearization. Could someone verify the accuracy of this procedure?
