Hello,
what general effect same tire wide mounting on various rim wide?
tire cornering stiffness,vertical stiffness,slip angle,etc.
how affect cornering performance ?

Thank You

Radek,

Very complex - too complex for this format.

But I can tell you that within the range listed by the tire manufacturers, tire properties don't change much.

Also, what Jim Hall was talking about was bias racing tires, which act quite differently than modern radial street tires. His point was good, but you have to take it in context.

OK,Thank You,
simply I must decide which best rim size use for my racing tires
(narrower always lighter with all obvious benefits .....unsprung,inertia.......but?)

I never met a tire that didn't improve with a wider rim, including race tires. Relaxation effects (transient response in Fy, Mx, and Mz) become better (faster and co-dependent), too. Even measureable Fx goes down in many cases. Be sure to match the scrub radius, other wise you are adding some conflict. Air pressure to prevent de-beading must also be monitored more closely.

That's why we measure such stuff. It avoids the rumors, tall tales and religious theories of tire disciples.

It helps to know what the rim was that your tire was developed on.

Downside is increased sensitvity to nibbling and trough wander (steering pull problems) via the Mz/camber characteristics and limit handling degradation because your camber curves are not right for the rim you wind up with. And of course, some ride issues. You are basically messing with the sidewall impedance.

Thank You Cibachrome,
all race tire manufacturers give quite wide range rim size recommendation, then many "racers" go narrower rims for cost and weight reasons.
I think ,that is not best way how get maximum from their tires.

also seems, use narrower rim for crossply tires really affect contact patch wide

Radek,

Yes, it is very helpful if you give us context for your question.

As a general rule, you want to use as wide a wheel width as you can for racing. Most of the properties desired for racing are either improved or not harmed by using wide wheels.

But it is my understanding that most sanctioning organizations limit the wheel width as part of the rules package exactly because of this. You should check the rules before you start.

But when it comes to street tires, it's a different kettel of fish. For one instance, ride is hurt by using a wide wheel.
