Help a MS-DOS Generation Programer

I used to program in the MS-DOS in languages such as Basic, Pascal and C and after years away from programming, I feel lost in understanding the fundamentals of Windows Environment programming. For example, I'd like to develop a program that reads formulas from the user and create an MS Excel File but I've got lost with OLE, DDE, Visual Basic Script Language. How can I fill this gap in my education ?

You have done pascal?, switch to Borlands Delphi which is the evolution of Turbo Pascal for windows.
