Hi all,

I've got a steel chemistry that I can't seem to link to any standard steel grade - it may not be standard but if it is can anyone help with an identification for the following:

C 0.27
Mn 0.5
Si 0.3
Ni 2.9
Cr 2.8
Mo 0.5

Any help appreciated!

Can you provide details of the part and the source of obtaining chemistry. Can another sample be taken and tested .

I'm just one step away from being rich, all I need now is money.
( read somewhere on the internet)

Hi arunmrao,

The sample is from a type of bolt... our initial guess was the material has been selected for some form of creep resistance.

Sample was spectroanalysed... I've suggested re-testing. We wanted to be able to specify a grade of steel but since I've not found anything to date that matches the analysis, I'm wondering whether it is a custom chemistry for the application.

I don't think the composition you have shown is correct, based on the Cr & Ni values. The closest "standard" grade that I can think of for a fastener application is 35NCD16, which was originally developed in France, but is now available around the world. Here are some links for basic information:

I guess 30CrNiMo8 from EN 10269 could also be a possibility if the Cr & Ni are somewhat off:

Hi just for the sake of those who responded, the steel grade has been identified - it's Japanese grade SNCM (nickel-chrome-moly steel) 630.

Thanks for the update. I only checked NAFTA and European standards, didn't even think to check JIS. SNCM630 according to JIS G4053 is indeed a good mactch to this composition.
