Help identifying an engine part

Does anyone know what is the part seen on the picture?
The part goes in the side hole near the glow plugs
It is from a forklift diesel engine

Since you didn't further identify the engine, I can only take a multiple WAG:

If the cable has one or two wires, it's probably a solenoid.
If the cable has three or more wires, it's probably a stepping motor.

I suspect that its purpose is to extend and retract the protruding stem, under control of some sort of computer.

The purpose of doing that is to change something within the engine, most likely injection quantity, perhaps injection timing.
Again, guessing, that it's associated with cold starting.


What does the engine shop manual say that it is?
Why are you working on an engine without a shop manual?

Engine Type is ISUZU 4LB1PA-01
I think that it is a solenoid that turn off the engine fuel intake by the move of the stem

I couldn't find an image that matched very well, but my best guess is that it's a fuel stop solenoid.

IF SO,
the stem extends to open a valve within the fuel injection pump.
When the stem is retracted, no fuel reaches the injectors.
It probably has two coils within it, and three or four wires, all connected to the key switch.
When the key is in the 'on' position, power is fed to the 'hold-in' winding.
When the key is in the 'start' position, power is fed to the 'pull-in' winding, which is not intended for continuous duty.
If the pull-in winding is burned out, e.g. from extended cranking when the engine wouldn't start for some other reason, the engine probably won't start even if you have fixed whatever else was wrong.
Is that why you have pulled it out?

Yes Mike. That is exactly why we pulled it out

Looks like a fuel cut off solenoid. And if you need to ID anymore parts just go to the dealer and ask to look at the shop manuals for what ever the engine or vehicle you are working on. I have never been turned down, came close once though.
