Hi! I want to put myself a linear actuator on the sliding gate to the cottage. I looked in the internet, there are a lot of offers and the prices are very different. Maybe there are people here who understand this and can advise me what type of actuator is better, manufacturer and where to buy? I will be very grateful.

You don't give many informative specifications. Answers will not be very useful until you do.

In my experience, the most common approach to sliding gate is a metal gate set into a track or rail system. Sensors or pushbuttons actuate a motor that turns a sprocket & chain drive system to move the gate left/right. Google "motorized sliding gate" to see plenty of images.

Lots of rules and regulations for personnel protection - if you build your own it is a liability minefield, at least in UK / Europe. Start with the Machinery Directives.

A problem with word choice.
Linear actuators are used for swing gates.
Chain drive sliding gate actuators are used for sliding gates.
Stanley used to be a good dependable opener. I installed, repaired and adjusted quite a few of them over the years.
The standard was 1/2 Horsepower.
I did run into a couple of heavy gates that the 1/2 HP model would not move.
Unfortunately I don't think that Stanley is making sliding gate openers anymore.
I'll be happy if anyone can show me that I am wrong on this point.

Put an actuator with a 24" travel on a sliding gate and the Fat Lady will never get through to sing.

I still stuck with this problem. Can't decide which is better. Any help?

You don't use a linear actuator on sliding gates... You use a chain-drive. Pick any of them they'll all work. If you want solar and radio control you'll have to check those boxes. Don't forget you have to figure out how and where to install a keypad on the outside and you have to plan on how you close the gate once you've entered and once you've left. And for Scotty, they tend to now include all the safety sensors needed like the one to detect the sliding-shut gate colliding with a person or vehicle.
