OK, we are having some difficulty on what should be an easy problem. We want to find out the effects of a bolt in tension when a force is applied to the piece to which it is attached.

The problem is, how do you load a bolt in tension? If you put a force pulling downward on the bolt, it stretches the bolt in the wrong place (at the end, rather than in the nut)

Does anyone have a suggestion for the best wat to load and constrain this bolt?

hmmmm...I would constrain the bottom 2/3rds of the threaded part and then load underneath the cap in the upward direction. But first you should do some hand calcs to corelate.
