I currently race a Ford Escort RS2000 in the modified saloon cat. but unfortunatly too many people have turned up with too much money. This means throttle body fuel injection, 3d engine mapping, custom 16v DOHC head conversions and j10,000 engine builds. Since I do not have this kind of money but want to win I scaned the rule book and noticed that I can turbo charge the engine providing I drop in capicity from 2000cc to 1300cc.

I am looking for advice on books to read web sites to visit or from people who have scratch designed a turbo system before so that I can avoid some expensive blown motors.

The only engine I can use is the ford kent(cross flow) type I imagine if most of you live in the states you'll never have heard of this motor but in the UK its quite common (we can't run big V8s our government is trying to pay off the countries national debt with petrol tax alone) I can fabricate all the manifolds myself and turbos are common in scrapyards these days.

Many thanks in advance

Dom, I not only have heard of the Ford Kent 1600,, but I have a 150hp version that has been sitting on the engine stand for 10 years (cam out of a Fiesta) but I would never trust the bottom end to heavy boost or RPM without a lot of expensive speed stuff. Can you use one of the Cosworth BDE , BDH type engines? They would give you the power you need, and they are an older engine that you might be able to pick up a bit cheaper.
A turbo 116E might work, but at what expense? RACING IS CHEAP, IT'S WHEN YOU DECIDE YOU WANT TO WIN THAT IT GETS EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am an expert at throwing money at race cars, ask my wife.(just sold my Lotus/Cortina and am now building a 1963 Cooper S for vintage racing---I am too old for the fast stuff , anymore.)

What's the possiblity of destroking and/or sleeving your block to get down to 1.3L and junkyard turbo'ing your way to victory? There are multiple Yahoo groups (groups.yahoo.com) that deal with turbo/supercharging. If your running a carb, you might consider the blowthru turbo group and jyturbo is a great group for EFI and carburated turbocharging. A simple blow-through carb setup will definatey be cost efficient, and as you said the parts should be easily found in the junkyard.

Alot of what you may have heard about pressurized carbs is a load of crap. 1) Any modern carb can easily handle ~20psi (1.3bar) of boost with some simple modifications and NO CARB BOX. If you want to go higher than this, you might have some troubles as carbs (even boxed) don't like going much higher than 30. Then you have to look into EFI or mech FI. You might just save yourself some time/money by adapting a primative FI setup from another vehicle to your application.
