I am trying to lend some help to one of the guys at my company who is not a member here. He is working in Solidworks 2011 for the firs time and is struggling with the lines. From what he and I can tell, you can only have solid or center lines. Is there a way to draw hidden lines / dashed lines that are not center lines? We've tried using the help menu in Solidworks, and it is of no use. All we can find is how to change all the lines to a few different styles. I've searched the forums here, and have not found anything quickly, so I figured I would ask and take the chance of sounding like a tard.

Thanks everyone!

First, you didn't say whether you are in a part or a drawing.

Do you know how to turn toolbars on and off?
(Right click in an open menu area. A list of toolbars will come up. The buttons for those that are currently on will show dark. If the Line Format toolbar button is not dark, press it to turn on the toolbar.)

Once the Line Format toolbar is on, just draw a line, select it, then click on the Line Format button. You will see several options, on of which is Dashed or Hidden. Select the one you want and your line will change to that format.

jboggs,
Sorry, I should have said this... he is working in a drawing. I will pass this info on and see if it helps.

Thanks

Just curious - you say he is a SW newbie and is working in a drawing. Why is he drawing hidden lines in a drawing? I can't understand why he would need to. He can just turn hidden lines on and off in each view of the part. Is he trying to create a 2D drawing from scratch by just drawing it, instead of modeling the part and creating the drawing from that?

I don't have any idea. I haven't seen his finished drawing yet for review, so I have no idea what he is doing. He told me it would make sense once I saw it.....

Something is squirrely about a guy who says (at the same time) "I don't know what I'm doing" and "Trust me, I know what I'm doing".

Sounds like the user is creating a drawing AutoCAD style in a SolidWorks drawing. I share the opinion that it is time for training.
