Hi all,

I have designed a temporary steel grid over a pit which will be plated over. From the beam spans that I need and designing for a 200 psf live loading,I have arrived at a maximum beam spacing using S6 x 12.5 members.
My question is now, how do I calculate what thickness of plate to use. Obviously, the greater the beam spacing, the thicker the plate would have to be. Thanks in advance for any help.

try Roarks Formulas for Stress and Strain, table 26 if I remember correctly.

Look on page 2-145 (I think) of the 9th ed. ASD manual. You should be able to find it in that chart.
