Hi...i work in a petroleum Refinery. We have done hot tappings in various hydrocarbon lines. Presently there is a requirement to take a hot tap in a methanol line. Can this be done? If yes, are there any special precautions to be taken other than proper flow to dissipate heat.
Thanks in advance.

Is there any restriction by your company policy to perform the hot tapping on the methanol line?
IMO, the hot tapping is a special operation on the live piping. All the safety procedures should be applied no matter what the fluid inside the line, if the operation is allowed.

I don't see any difference between methanol and a flammable hydrocarbon.

Liquid hot taps can sometimes suffer from weld cooling if not properly executed.

A matter for true professionals.
