We are hi-pot testing our 4.16 kV distribution circuit breakers at 15 kV (AC) for two-three minutes, I was reading the circuit breaker spec. manual and it says test the breakers for 5-20 seconds!!! I'm seeking your opinion for the reasonable testing duration in order not to deteriorate the breaker insulation integrity!! Thanks in advance for your help and participation.

In general, you should follow the manufacturer's recommendations. I don't think you would risk damaging the breaker unless the recommended test voltage is exceeded, if that's your concern.

What kind of breaker? What voltage? Were you testing pole-to-pole, pole-to-ground or across open contacts?
