stands for high-potential testing.

It is potentially destructive.

For dc hi-pot see IEEE 95.

ac hi-pot for new motors is specified at 2E+1 by NEMA MG-1. For older motors, a lower voltage is appropriate.

Hi-pot.
It is a high potential applied to an insulation.
For new equipment it is known as an "Insulation Proof Test" and the idea is to approve or reject the machine. Deffective or weak spots are assumed to fail under this increased dielectric test.
The figures are empirical. MEMA MG1 states Vpac=2*Vl+1kV RMSAC 50 or 60 HZ applied during one minute. A DC test is allowed but the DC test voltage is increased to:
Vpdc = 1.7*Vpac . Vl is the line to line nominal voltage of the machine.
It is recognized that this type of test could develop premature aging of an insulation an repetitive testing at full stress is not recommended.
