Hi, i am steel trader and oen of my customers is asking me to qute them some pipe & fittings in Cs (A105 for forgings, A106B for pipes and A234 WPB for fittings) HIC tested. Is there such thing? I have sold many times HIC plates but never. Some of the qtties in their request are very small so, can we perform a HIC test on an existing stock item? is the HIC a NDE or i would need a 2nd piece of a given heat to be tested? thank you for your time. Sebastian

hi
NACE TM0284 testing method for HIC describes sampling and testing apparatus for different product forms, welded/seamless/forgings, ...every product form can be HIC tested
it is a "destructive" examination where specimen are sampled, tested and cut in cross sections.

This is only a testing method : requirement for HIC testing should be defined by Customer.
HIC is known to be an issue for plates (flat rolled) and other products originated form plates. Forgings, seamless pipes, castings, ... are less sentitive than plates but they can eventually be subjected to HIC damage. A couple of controls such as moderately low S and P content(below material specification but not down to clean steels as required for plates) in these products provide additionnal resistance to HIC.

it is up to you to decide if you realy need these HIC tested materials that are less sensitive than plates to HIC damage. we don't ask for HIC tested materials if not originated from plates but others may have another approach...
