High Pressure and Temperature Thermowells? 1

Hi all,

I need to measure the temperature of a process fluid that is under 15,000psi and 400°F. I am looking at using a thermocouple in a thermowell, but I am having trouble finding something that is rated to that high of pressure. Any suggestions? I am not too picky for connections as we can accommodate to what is available.

it is not what you would call a catalog item nor is it particulary unusal, just
contact your local supplier.
 
What is the process fluid? What are the corrosion requirements, abrasion/erosion resistance, metallurgy of the pipe (and thermowell)? Once you know that, HEN, contact the supplier. A thermowell is a fluid system boundary - the measuring device just slips inside and contacts the outside surface of the well.
 
Other data required is the diamater of the pipe, Thickness of the pipe, Velocity of the fluid (to check vibration of thermowell) etc

Thank you for the responses.

Specifics are not all that important at this stage as we can design what the thermowell will be mounted into to meet the needs of what is available without any major setbacks.

As for the process fluid it is crude oil, and 3-5 gpm in a 1" diameter pipe (could be a bit smaller).

Can you recommend a supplier or brand that I should look into?

Why not just insulate that bit and use a surface mounted thermocouple?? At 1" there won't be any significant difference in temperature and sticking a thermowell into a fairly thick 1" pipe won't do the flow much good...

1 inch diameter?

Going to be almost impossible to buy a thermowell that short AND that tiny a diameter => The thermowell is going to be larger than the ID of the pipe.
 
Use a Tee to install the thermowell in. I would think Bonney Forge or Ladish would have the thermowells in their catalogs.

I doubt that you can get a standard thermowell to fit into a 1" line. Our company standard only has thermo wells for 4" lines and larger. A common way of fitting thermowells into small bore lines is locally to increase the pipe bore to 4". A detail for that can be found in Norsok standard L-CR-003 which is available for free at this location:


Might look a bit over the top on a 1" line though, and would have to be locally supported. Alternatively use a surface mounted and insulated temperature probe as suggested by LittleInch. Some probes are designed to be screwed into a 1/2" boss welded to the surface of the pipe.
 
We use 2" TW on 2" runs by means of equal tee's. No prob at all.
It overkill to reduce to 4"; ever walked through a plant with small bore piping (1/2" - 3"), and find these 'big zits' where thermowells are installed and the line locally increases to 4"?
