There is a way to inspect littles columns of metal (.100" length and 0.020" diameter) with optical system??

Actually, column are cut from a wire as a rate of 20 col/second and they fall in a container. Just after the cutting proccess, if I can I would like to put a camera system that will check dimensions(+/- 0.001"). I want to use time recquiered to the column to reach the container as a buffer, and put high speed sorting mechanism before the container. This way, I have no choice to do overkill on the product because i have always more than one column in the drop at the same time but doesn't mind. The space area is very restricted too. Is optical system can do this JOB??
thanks
