I have ridden the maglev from the Shanghai airport. I have never seen it running faster than 200mph, about 2/3 of rated max speed. There is a sweet spot for speed vs power, and that isn't 300mph.
Even the Japanese trains usually run slightly below max speed.

Thanks, Ed...

Like Ed, I've ridden the maglev from Shanghai Pudong Int'l Airport to the taxi stand many times. Going ~200 mph is always a thrill!

Good Luck,

It's an even bigger thrill doing it in a BMW on the Autobahn :)

Note that the fastest that I've personally driven on the Autobahn is about 180 kph, but the fastest that I've ridden on the Autobahn is closer to 250 kph.

Use to take my Z28 to over 150... was a hoot.

was a hoot... was fun... (like hooters)... not familiar with the word hoon... brand new car arrived and started tearing the engine down the next day... my dad came by and wondered why the kitchen was filled with car parts... old LS6 engine.

As in the hoon was a hoot.

It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts. (Sherlock Holmes - A Scandal in Bohemia.)

Thanks... not at all a hoon (I'd never heard the term). At those speeds, you have to be pretty careful... any screwup can be pretty definitive.

In the Canadian prairies, with straight and level roads for miles and visibility of more than a mile, both on the road and on intersecting side roads, 150 mph or 240 kph is not nearly as dangerous as it may be in other locations.

...and I had no suicidal tendencies. I was well aware of the hazards. I remember when my brother first drove the car. A light rain started... when he accellerated from the stop, he did a donut in the intersection. He just wasn't used to that power.

I love standing on the train platforms in Japan when a Shinkansen goes through the station.
It may be on the center tracks 12' from me but it still impressive at +200mph.
