We need a system for the temperature monitoring on already installed high voltage cable. I know for the fiber optic DTS, but I would like to hear if there is something else on the market. We need to take measurements on the 10 locations along the short 10 kV cable (three single phase cables).

vladanc,

You could try thermocouples. If they are to be buried then you need thermocouples suitable for buriel, these normally have a metallic sleeve. There are a number of companies that can supply these.

The thermocouples can be produced in significant lengths however it is probable that you will have to place monitoring equipment nearby. You need to be aware of induced voltages from the power cable, particularily under fault conditions.

The method of attaching the thermocouples to the cables needs to be considered carefully. I prefer to attach (glue)a metal foil to the cable jacket and then the thermocouple to the foil with an epoxy and tape wrapping overall.

I would not suggest that you do this while the cables are live.

Hope this helps.
