Hoist Maintenance Program 1

I'm trying to come up with a maintenance program that makes sense for our O/H hoists. We have about 80 hoists, and typically they aren't fixed until they stop working. We have an outside service group that performs inspections, but this seems to be a racket.

Anybody have some helpful documentation on how to PM? What makes economic sense for replacing a hoist, is it when the brakes wear out or what?

The hoist manufacturer is supposed to have PM recommendations according to OSHA 1910.179 L(1).

If you have a variety of brands, it can be challenging. Otherwise check into an OEM's training assuming you have in-house maintenance. If you do not have manuals, you can get them on line from a variety of sources, get them and follow the OEMs recommendations.
Keep in mind that reputable service groups will be conservative for liability reasons - you need to be as well especially when it is hoist related.
Do your best to know what replacement costs are for your critical units and make sure you do not pay excessively for repairs (a good rule of thumb is 60%, but not for older models which may soon be obsolete).
Brakes are a common issue, and some OEMs offer "life time" brake lining replacements - material only.
You just have so many that you're going to have issues even if the duty cycle isn't that great.
