Figure R602.10.6.2 details APA's Portal Frame with hold-downs and calls for (2)4200 lb strap-type hold-downs (embedded into concrete and nailed into framing). I have always interpreted this to mean that a embedded strap, like a Simpson STHD14, is required. I had a builder misplace some STHD hold-downs and they need to retrofit the hold-downs for the portal frames. He would like to use a hold-down like a Simpson HDU. Does anyone have any insight to the option of using a HDU or similar hold-down? I can't find anything on APA's website regarding this. Because the APA portal frame allowable shear values come from specific testing I have a feeling that unless you do it the way that they detail in the IRC, you have to use some kind of engineered solution instead. Any insight would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

It is a HDU5 or HDU8 depending on your wood species.

Can you search the web for the online Simpson catalog?

My questions are not so much with HDUs. I have used these hold-downs before...the question is more regarding the fact that the IRC specifically calls for a strap-type hold-down embedded into the concrete. I have attached a copy of APA's response to my question which is along the lines what I was originally thinking - because the APA tested the portal frames with strap-style embedded hold-downs, an strap-style embedded hold-down must be used.

I wouldn't worry about that - strap hold downs are always being omitted or mis-located, so the HDU is an acceptable field substitute/

cyeates, do you have a pdf of that portal frame that you can share?
