Hi,
Is there any way to design a hollow core without using finite element?

Yes...they are designed as simply supported beams with analysis based on per foot of width or based on section properties provided by the supplier.

PCI publishes the "PCI Manual for the Design of Hollow Core Slabs" that has a lot of design examples. Check 'em out at The book costs $80 - which I think is steep, though I have a copy at my desk right now...

Agree with above...but do any of you agree with me that Hollow Core is a truly horrible structural system.....

It's difficult to produce openings in the floor/roof without adding beam.

It's difficult to adequately tie the HC to walls and meet ACI development criteria (without using a vast array of embedded plates).

It's difficult to alter once in place should the owner want additional openings, etc.

I could go on but I'm just finishing up a large HC project (the design/build contractor's choice not mine) and I HATE the system with a passion.

JAE I must disagree with your opinion of precast hollow core plank systems. Just like any other material, it can be just the item needed when used in the right applications. As a floor or roof system, it can provide a quick work platform on a jobsite as a building goes up. Yes, just like any other material it has some drawbacks (it is heavy and holes can sometimes be a problem), but none that I consider any more of a problem than other materials might have. For speedy, safe and fire resistive construction of basement areas and low multi-story buildings it is a great product to have in a designer's arsenal.

No, I don't work for a precaster, but I do know a good product when I see one.
