Hello engineering friends,

I'm looking for a method to calculate the hoop stress in an oval thick-walled pipe. Other than performing a FEM that is. I came across this paper ( but as far as I gather this refers to thin-walled pipe work only.

Thanks!

Appendix C.3.4.6.4 of PD 5500 has stress calculation methods for deviations from design shape. Included is a shell ovality equation. It doesn't seem to place any limits on the amount of ovality either.
