I've read many threads about the topic of the vapour-liquid separation. ? have to size a liquid vapour separator for ammonia flooded evaporator and I've used the charts of the handbook "Industrial Refrigeration" of W. Stoecker for drop diameters from 0.20 mm (0.008 in) to 0.38 mm (0.015 in)to get the separating velocities. I obtain a velocity from 0,45 (1.48 ft/s) to 1 m/s (3.28 ft/s).
To make a check I used the Souders-Brown equation with a k = 0.107 m/s(0.35 ft/s) I get a velocity higher.
I suppose the equation can be applied also to the horizontal separators and I found a value of k = 0.120 m/s (0.40 ft/s).
In these two cases I get a velocity of 1.27 m/s (4.17 ft/s) for k=0.107 and 1.42 m/s (4.66 ft/s) for k=0.120. Unfortunately the k coeficients I found are not correlated to the drop diameters so do not know if they're really valid.
My question is wether I can use this equation also for the horizontal separators and which is the proper coefficient I can use.
The separator will be mounted on a large size chiller and I cannot use a vertical one for height problem so I must reduce the dimensions as possible but which is the velocity limit that I have to consider?
Does anybody can give me an help?
many thanks in advance
