horizontal dry heads

Have you ever heard of horizontal heads not being within a wall cavity? We have a historic building where the client is requesting we do not install any piping in the walls. They also do not want the upright pendants in the middle of the ceiling, so they are requesting sidewall heads on exposed piping. What do you think? NFPA requires 4 inches max to the deflector, I can't find a head that would meet this.

We have done this type of installation on many occasions. The ceiling to deflector is 4" minimum for sidewall sprinklers and 6" - 12" max depending on the sprinkler listing. You can have the deflector as much as 6" from the wall they are mounted along.

We typically run the pipe as tight against the wall as practical at about 6" centerline down from the ceiling.

I saw this yesterday in a Starbucks in downtown Columbia, SC.. Beautiful stamped tin ceiling with exposed piping and sidewall heads, painted to match the ceiling.

Extended coverage sidewall heads on both sides should cover almost any historic-building sized room.
