Horizontal Hydrotest of Vertical Equipment 1

Hello everyone.

I am looking for your advice / opinion on below.

We are having vertical equipment with 3m Dia and 8m TL to TL distance with operating fluid as full of liquid. Design code: ASME Sec VII Div.1 , Design Pressure = MAWP = 6 bar , Hydro-test Pressure = 1.3 X MAWP = 7.8 bar

We have performed hydro-test at shop at 7.8 bar at top of the vessel in horizontal position. We haven't considered additional vertical liquid head.

For doing this we have taken reference of below ASME interpretation.
****************************************************************************************************************
Interpretation: VIII-1-95-27
Subject: Section VIII, Division 1 (1992 Edition, 1993 Addenda); UG-99(b)
Date Issued: January 12, 1995
File: BC94-414

Question (1): Does the last sentence of UG-99(b) of Section VIII, Division 1, "All loadings that may exist during this test shall be given consideration," require that the static head that exists in a tower in the vertical position must be considered when determining the test pressure in the horizontal position?

Reply (1): No.

Question (2): Does UG-99 specify in which position a vertical tower must be hydrotested?

Reply (2): No.dd

Is this correct or anybody having update on this?

Waiting for your valuable feedback/advise.

Regards

Dear pc2,

What you have done is fine, if the Owner agrees.

But the Owner then still needs to carry out hydro-test after installation at site, at the vertical position.

Regards.

Dhurjati Sen,

I disagree, there is nothing in the code that states the customer must perform another hydrotest after installation at site.

Cheers,
Marty

large (tall) vertical vessels are most often hydrotested in the horizontal position and have been so tested in the nearly 50 years that I have been involved.

Dear marty007 & weldstan,

So the vertical liquid head is never taken into consideration?

Regards?

DHURJATI SEN

Dhurjati Sen,

By code, liquid head in the vertical orientation is not required to be taken into consideration for hydrotest (per interpretation above).

Customers however can specify whatever they want in their corporate standards, and could specify this requirement.

Cheers,
Marty

Agree with Marty. In addition if it is an ASME Section VIII Div. 1 stamped item it is required in App. W if tested in the vertical position it must be indicated in the remarks section of the ASME MDR.
