Hello all,

A structural part of transmission tower made out of A 572 Gr.50 steel requires 122 degree bending.
The part thickness is 3.25". Is it safe to do hot bending? If so what would be the temperature and method to be used?
Furnace, flame etc? Thanks for your quick response [smile]

It is safe to perform warm bending but you need to perform the warm bending at a working temperature below the post weld heat treatment temperature for this material. Review the production welding specification and keep 50 deg F below the post weld heat treatment temperature (1100 deg F). As far as method, I would use a furnace for heating, if practical (size), to ensure proper soak time and distance from the bend.

If warm bending does not work, you will be forced to perform hot bending meaning working at above 1650 deg F and air cooling to normalize. This may need to be done by another shop that has the capability to hot form and heat treat.

Thanks a lot for your quick response
