Dear Fellows,

We have noticed that there is some up-down movement of two pipes coming from a 3-phase separator. The movement is only seen if someone shake or move the pipes, otherwise the pipes are stable. The parameters for the pipes are as following:

Size 2 inch, SMLS Pipe, SCH 80, ASTM A 106 Gr. B, Operating temperature 38 degrees celsius, operating pressure ATM, Insulated, Fluid: Hot Water Inlet and Outlet pipes.

Do you think that we should add another support after the descending elbows (See photo)? If yes, how we can support such request?

Thanks for support.

You've been busy today!

Yes you should stop pipes moving when they are not supposed to. Add a support just below the elbow with some lateral restraints.

Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.

Thank you LittleInch,

Right, but how we can support our recommendations; i.e code/standard reference, software, stress analysis.

Kind regards,

All those things. And add servicability.

Not everything is or should be calculated. If you're the client just ell them to fix it and add to the snagging list.

You should find a clause somewhere in the specification or scope of works which calls for all pipes to be "properly secured" or supported - do a search in those docs. These clearly are not. Don't waste time arguing and trying to prove it. just ell them to do it and if they refuse tell the site team to fix it.

Please not directly on the ell.
Leaving some possibility of movement is good, even for a 2" pipe.

A black swan to a turkey is a white swan to the butcher ... and to Boeing.

For this size and temperature there will be no formal stress analysis done. Usually, some client piping standard will have some standard span table. Try to dig into that if you really need something to justify to the customer.
Yes, don’t put any support on the elbow. They are meant to flex and accommodate movement.
