hi guys....i'm an electrical engineer fresh out of college so pardon me if my question seems silly.....i'm new to the forum and this is my first thread....so hopefully i dont make a complete ass of myself....

i'm currently workin with different motors and my colleagues or not of much help informatively......so although i have a general idea about the operation of motors and have managed troubleshooting a few problems so far.......

i wanted to know how to identify the type and other specifications of a motor visually.......

meaning is it an induction motor, synchronous motor, etc...???
how to identify the number of poles???
what are the different applications for the various types???
what is one types advantage over the other???

Try using Google Images and search for the different types of motors to get an idea of what they look like. Of course, pay attention to to the links and descriptions to ensure the images are actually what you searched for.

A first step may be to look at the nameplate.

Lots of pictures if you click around at Baldor's on-line catalog top level here:

Bill's suggestion is a good one. Find out what is on the nameplate and what it means. I assume you know how to you figure out the number of poles from the nameplate speed.

Leeson motors has a great tutorial on motors. It can be downloaded free from their website.
