How can we assign EARTHQUAKE and WIND LOADS in SAFE?

Hello all,

I would like to know how to define and assign earthquake, and wind loads etc. in SAFE? I cant see any option to describe loads definitely except surface loads in SAFE.

I know that it is possible to export all the loads from ETABS with model but I am not able to do it somehow. So, I need to learn how to design slab systems in SAFE with all necessary loads without any benefit from ETABS.

I hope you can help me in any way.

Thanks already now.

You can define earthquake and wind lateral loads in the new vesion of SAFE which is I think Version 12. Even in this version you can assign response spectrum forces too.
In earlier version you can only import vertical forces including wind and earthquake but not the lateral one and these forces can help you for checking uplift not shear.

Hope it help.

Hello Zeeshan,

Thank you so much for your answer. It helped me. However your answer is the cause of some more questions in my mind also.

I would like to design slab systems including beams also thanks to SAFE and Csi Detailer completely. So If we are not able to assign vertical forces in SAFE how can we accept the result reinforcing details without taking into consideration lateral loads?

Because If I dont remember wrong, we have to assign lateral earthquake and wind loads also in ETABS.

Maybe it is not necessary to assign lateral loads for slab systems, I dont know. But we are able to detail beams also thanks to SAFE and Csi Detailer. Then is it possible to accept reinforcing results for beams from SAFE and Csi Detailer? Or do I have to do something different?

I am sorry if some of my questions are not logical. I am just a new but curious ETABS and SAFE user. I will be very glad if you can help me again.

Thanks,
Latif

Your diaphragm should be able to recieve the forces and transfer to your lateral members. For composite deck or metal deck you can check the capacities from the vendor catlog and you don't need to design your slab for lateral load but you need to check the deformation compatibility by following ACI method. For beams we usually do not design for lateral loads except the collector beams.

All the best!!

Dear Zeeshan,

Hello again. I am sorry to ask you more and more questions
and taking your time but your answers helps me so much.

I have also a different kind of problem with SAFE. When I start the program using one of template slab systems, I am able to design and detail it. But when I try to import model from ETABS (I did it for foundation), I am not able to desing it completely. I mean,I can run analyze and desing but I can not see any information about rebars etc.

If I use SafeV12 :

-I can see only empty slab plan when I command display desing info. That is all. And also there is no information after running detail.

If I use SafeV8 :
-I can run desing correctly but when I want start to detail, the program tells me the following warning:

"No valid objects were found for detailing. No detailing can be carried out."

I wonder where my errors might be.

Thank you very much.

There can be many thing which are causing these errors.

Check the property of the slab element.
Check the strips.

Are you able to perform the analysis????

Yes I am able to perform anaylsis without any problem. I think, I have found the problem for SafeV12. It must be because of design stripts. I am not sure but I think I have to draw design stripts before designing.

When I choose template model, the program accepting it with its defined desing stripts but when I did not, I have to draw design stripts by myself. Is it correct?

I believe if u r not using template then u have to define strips otherwise you will not be able to design.
