Hi,

I need to find a correlation between cold forging of aluminium alloys and their mechanical properties.

thanks!

Go ahead and do it. What is your problem, please explain.

Exist a correlation between work-hardening of aluminium alloys and their mechanical properties like yield and tensile strenghts? The cold forging of an aluminium alloy change its mechanical properties, but how? How change the yield/tensile strenght after cold forging?

giamma109,

Are you familiar with the term Flow Stress? This is the English-language term used to describe the true stress required to cause plastic deformation at a particular value of strain, strain rate, and temperature. It is usually displayed on a graph with true stress on the vertical axis and the true strain on the horizontal axis. You can use this to determine the change in strength that occurs due to work hardening in the cold forging process. The following link is an excellent description of the fundamentals of metal forming, including flow stress:

The following are two more articles in the excellent Training in Aluminium Application Technologies (TALAT) series that contain actual flow stress curves for alloy 6082 (AlMgSi1):

The following is a link to a presentation from the 2004 International Cold Forging Group meeting on forming simulation that describes flow stress testing, etc.:

Cold working steel increases the tensile strength due to strain hardening at the bends but decreases ductility. I would think cold work of aluminum has similar effects. University of Missouri at Rolla is one of the leaders in Cold Formed research.
