Hello,

I'm Robert from Hydromar, we design hydraulic cilinders (installations) voor sailing-yachts.
Now we have a cilinder that keeps the gig up. This cilinders experience "normal buckling" that can be calculated with the "Eulers formule" but also experience a side force, produced by the gravity.

Below a picture of the situation:

Green= The gig;
Blue= The cilinder;
Red= Mast.

Normaly we make the ciinders thick, so that we know, from experience, that the cilinder is strong enough. But if we know how to calculate the buckling load, we can produce more efficient.

Sorry for my bad english, I'm from Holland.

I hope someone can help me.

Robert

The question is al little bit indistinct, but does somebody now, how I can combinate the " Eulers formule", with the side force on the cilinder, that is created by the gravity?

Maybe someone have a other solution..
