How do I convert sketchup V5 files into Solid Edge V18 1

Does anyone know the best way I can convert skethup v5 into Solid Edge v18. Sketchup does seem to support dwg, dxf, fbx, obj, xsi and wrl files. dwg and dxf are suppoesed to be supported by solid edge however solid edge errors when I try to import. I have tried converting into autoCAD 2004 as an intermediary however this only seems to achieve a 2D sketch rather than the 3D.

Hi,

when you have a .dwg file which also holds a 3D model of the part
the embedded 3D part is usually a .sat (ACIS) file. This part of the
.dwg must be at ACIS Version 13 or lower. The .dwg should be at
version AC1018 or lower (the .dwg contains the version as the first
6 characters into the file)
To get the 3D-Part out of the .dwg you have to open the the
.dwg with SE. after that done a file with .sat extension should
have been created in the same folder which can be opened by SE

Actually I made a mistake I don't get an error when I try to import it straight into SE(dwg dxf) it just loads up as a draft 2D sketch and I can't seem to change that. The problem comes when I am using autoCAD 2004 to load the dwg/dxf files and then convert them into acis (.sat) files, it says that there is no solid body to convert, and asks you to select it in the command line, however you can clearly see the solid body in the display and there seems to be no way of selecting the body which satisfies the sofware.

I cannot seem to find any .sat files as you suggested. I have also tried Autodesk Inventor 11 however this just seems to load the sketchup dwg/dxf files as 2D sketches also.

Are you using Sketchup Free or Sketchup Pro V5?
I don't think it is possible to export 3D objects from Sketchup Free, not mentioned in the specs.

Well from details on the web site it certainly seems to have the facilities to convert to 3D.

I shall try a few different methods and see if I can work it out. The 3DS export may be a better alternative as I have an okino plug in for 3DS which converts into parasolids.

Sketchup PRO does have the ability to export 3D, Sketchup FREE not.
3DS Max is a good idea if you have what is necessary.

I think I now know why I am experiencing the problem. sketchup is a surface modeller and therefore there is no solid body to convert. My next quetsion would be does anyone know of a way of converting surfaces into true 3D?
