Hi. I have a part that's been imported from a step file. See attachment for part tree.

I want to add a new feature to this part by extruding some holes through it. I've drawn the sketch but Inventor won't allow me to extrude. Why is this? How do I get around this problem?

Thanks in advance.

In the Extrude dialog box, are you selecting first the sketch, then the solid to which the extrude command applies? In Inventor 2014, the solids will highlight with purple-dashed lines when each is selected for modification by the Extrude. Note that this cannot be used to combine solids by "welding" them together with an extruded feature that passes through them all.
A button for this appears in the dialog whenever a part has multiple bodies, which is usually not active for regular parts.

Also, you can create a new body, independent of the existing bodies in the part, by selecting the "new body" button at the bottom of the Extrude type buttons (down the middle of the Extrude dialog box).

Thank you SparWeb. I wasn't selecting the solid. Doh! Easy when you know how! Thanks.
