How do I mesh two different objects as one?

Hello,

So here's what I'm trying to do.

I have two part files. One is entirely made of material A, another made of material B, so only two materials to deal with here. I would like to mesh them as one object, but with two different materials assigned to them.

I tried assembly but it seems like they like to stay apart as two objects. I tried to merge them, which solves the meshing problem, but now only one material can be assigned since they are merged into one part.

Is there a way to "mesh as 1 but assign material as 2"?

Thanks

You create the part as a dependent part so you mesh the part rather than independently as two parts. You still assemble the two parts separately.

i think there's some mix-up with terminology here. do you mean i create the assembly with it being dependent on parts?

Look at the tree and click on the part. It should say 'make independent' or 'make dependent'. It refers to the meshing procedure. If you have many copies of the same part then it's easier just to mesh the part as one and then assemble the multiple meshed parts, rather than mesh the parts independently.

You can also add the parts to an assembly and merge them together retaining the boundaries and then mesh. I hope this helps.

I am also trying to do this. I have tried those things and can't seem to be able to assign different materials to them. I am importing two solid geometries. One is to go inside the other and be modeled as a different material. I want the entire model to be one connected mesh as to not have to deal with interactions between parts. I want to know if there is a way to partition a volume with another volume in order to assign different material properties to each one. Could you let me know if you found something that works? Thank you.

Can you just create one part and then partition them, finally you assign material properties to different PARTITIONS?
Hope this helps!

Thank you everyone. It has been great help.

@ Rob Stupplebeen: I am also working on the same thing, how do we apply two different materials to two different parts after merging? Is it like we have to apply the material properties before merging?

Thank you.
