I have a simple single pass two pipe heat exchanger that uses staturated Steam (250 F) to heat a pressurized gas from 40 F to 120 F. The inner pipe carries the steam. Inner pipe has smooth wall on its inside surface and has fins on its outsde surface. The pressurized gas flows on the shell side (cross flow) and contacts the fins. I want to change the heating fluid from steam to water/glycol mix (180 F-190F). How do I calculate how affective the heat exchanger is with the new fluid? Reference texts or publications?

Is this really a shell and tube HEX or a double pipe (counterflow) HEX? Either way, this a basic problem that should be discussed in any heat exchanger book and some thermo and heat transfer books.

I thought you had a double pipe heat exchanger until you mentioned that the shell side is in cross flow. In case it is a double pipe heat exchanger, I suggest the text book "Kakac and Liu". It has a complete chapter on this type of heat exchanger wih examples.
