How does CATIA determine the "mean plane" ?

The scenario is when a profile is swept along with a 3d spline using the subtype of "With reference surface" that isn't specified explicitly, so the "Default(mean plane)" is computed instead.
I wonder by which methods this mean plane is constructed, is it the mean plane of all points using to define the 3d spline and is there any chance to reproduce this plane manually?

Any help will be most appreciated.
