How many copies of the BPVC does a cargo tank maker need?

Hello:

If a small-ish tank trailer manufacturing company is getting started and needs to buy the needed ASME B&PV Code, how many copies of the *same* sections would it need? A shop like this, intending to build to DOT-406, DOT-407, and MC-331, needs BPVC Sections II (Part A and B), V, VIII (Division 1) and IX.

If I have 8 welders and 2 engineers, am I OK with just one copy of each section? They're not cheap, but I obviously want enough to be legal *and* to have the work done properly.

Thanks,
-Sean

We manufacture ASME vessels and we only buy one copy of each. Just make sure that everyone that may need info out of them has access to them. And yes they are very expensive.

Good question, metengr! Section XII is indeed intended for transport tanks, but it's not yet allowed as an *alternative* to the others, for haz-mat service (which is what I'm trying to figure out). Haz-mat tank makers still have to build to the other 4.

The DOT seems to be trying to get XII allowed as an option (not required, is my understanding) for haz-mat transport tanks, but it hasn't happened yet.

If I can pick your brain on my question, metengr: Would you agree with ASMEQC that one copy of each needed BPVC section is enough, assuming access can be assured?

Yes. However, I would look into an IHS subscription service. Many companies have this for easy access from any location, shop or field provided you have an internet connection.

metengr, yes, the IHS subscription does seem like it could be a good choice -- thanks for pointing it out.

And "thank you" to you and ASMEQC for your opinions on how many copies are needed.

I appreciate all.
