I don't think there is a limit by code etc, but minimizing them is always good.

However, practically it is difficult to get single length of cables in excess of 250 or 300 meters. So you can expect a splice every such distance. So from that point of view 3 splices in 1.5km run is pretty good.

The splices should only be in manhole or a hand hole or in accessible and protected space.

I often found that the joint itself is the strongest point within the HV Line (if properly done, of course...!).

The limitation of joints in a line is due mainly to an increased possibility of human errors when doing the joints...

Verify that the semiconductor materials are properly repaired, that screens are countinuously sounds and that external armors are well joined and protected. Use a crimping tool for the barrels that will make a round pressure and verify that the cores are well inserted within the barrels. Then make a proper High Voltage pressure test. That's the best you can do.

By the way, if joints are made with proper waterproof compound, they could be directly buried, but a clear mark shall be installed on the soil surface clearly indicating the position of the joint.

After all the above, record everything in a Log Book (generally an O&M Manual) and move on.

Best luck.
