Hello Friends,
I am a mechnical engineering degree holder from Mumbai University,India.I want your help in finding answers of the few questions in my mind, and dont worry i wont be working in USA and taking away an job meant for an american...,We have extensive oil reserves in Asia..
My first question is,
1.After graduation,Where do i start?I have my degree but i dont know where do i head in?
I know the hierarchy of an oil rig that is,Roustabat--Roughtneck--Derrickman--Assistant driller-driller-Night pusher--Tool pusher.
but isnt this hie racy meant for people without a college degree??
if yes, what is the hierarchy meant for engineering graduates? Please explain me what are the fields in which engineering graduates are employed and what is the rank structure?
2.If i am not wrong, there are four fields in which engineers are employed, they are,
Reserviors,facilities,drilling,production...right?
3.What courses are needed for getting into either of these four fields?Or do i directly get employed as an intern in lets say BP?When i say courses,i mean something like pipping engineering diploma(8 months) or NDT(8 months)? Will they be benefecial?
4.If i am not wrong,in Drilling, the ranks would be something like, assistant driller, junior drilling engineer, senior drilling engineer and company man?right?if this rank hierarchy is wrong, please correct me.
5.How long does it take for one to be promoted from the lower rank to an higher rank and what determines this promotion?Sea time or do i have to give exams for getting promoted too?
6.Do i need to do masters in engineering(lets say in drilling engineering/petroleum engineering) at any stage?
7.After mid 30s,what is the scope of settling down from an field job to a desk job?will an masters help me in getting a desk job after 30s?
8.Are any physical criterias for working on oil rigs?i do have 6/6 vision but with contact lenses which cant be corrected.
9.Is the rotation done on 28 days on and 28 days off basis only. What if i want to do a 28 days on and 56 days off schedule(ofc i know i wont get the say pay but is this possible?)
10.Overall,if any of you is from the oil industry,do you regret joining it?Is there something you hate about your job???
