A tall, narrow, cylindrical opening in a mass of concrete is completely filled with water. The water temperature drops causing the water to freeze and expand.
I am looking for a method of analysis to allow me to calculate the pressure forces developed by the expansion that would be applied to the concrete.
I am thinking that for the condition where the top of the cylinder is open, there would be no significant pressure applied to the concrete at the perimeter of the containment area. But if the top is sealed, and the water is assumed to be confined within the concrete, then pressure forces would develop due to the restraint of volume change.
Any suggestions/resources?
