How to calculate required valve closure times to prevent surge..

Dear sirs,

I've read lost of really detailed articles about pipeline surge or water hammer. I am working on project with short lines <2 km. Most less than 300meters, I want to calculate if there is likely to be a surge problem and if i need to specify slow closing valves.

Can anyone please point me in the correct direction of a calculation guide.

300 m could cause surge. The rule of thum is that the closing time of a valve should be more than twice the length divided by the speed of sound in the liquid. But then again what if a valve is almost closed at the steady state flow condition?

You have to be more careful with valves patterns that allow almost full flow to continue until they reach about 10% open, then stop all remaining flow from there to 0% open. A long closing time doesn't do much good with those types of valves.
